Dr. Cynthia Ward

Who Is She

Dr. Ward is a licensed health psychologist who provides assessment and therapy for children, adolescents, and families coping with acute and chronic medical conditions and related emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Ward takes a skills-based approach to help individuals and families learn strategies to improve functioning and well-being. 

Dr. Ward specializes in working with individuals and families to promote adjustment to chronic or acute medical conditions—recognizing the interplay between physical and psychosocial health and well-being. Common medical conditions that she has specialized in include: chronic pain, psychosomatic symptoms, concussions, gastrointestinal disorders, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, sleep problems, diabetes, cancer, sickle cell disease, heart, kidney or liver disease, eating problems after illness, injury or surgery, asthma and breathing problems, cystic fibrosis and various neurodevelopmental disorders. 

Together she works to optimize your physical, behavioral, emotional, and social health; to help you find ways to make living with your medical conditions easier and treat co-occurring stress, anxiety, mood, and behavioral concerns and disorders. 

 

Professional Experience

Dr. Ward has worked in a variety of medical and mental health settings, including academic medical centers, children’s hospitals and pediatric medical subspecialty clinics. She has held faculty positions, supervisory, and leadership roles at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She currently serves as the Psychology Advisor for a sleep app called Restfully. She is a professional member of the American Psychological Association, the Georgia Psychological Association, the Society for Pediatric Psychology, the Society for Health Psychology and the American Pain Society. Her undergraduate work was completed at Elon University. She holds a Masters and PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Georgia School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University with specialization in Child Clinical Psychology. She completed her residency and two years of fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in pediatric psychology. Her most recent position that she held was former Clinical Director of the Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Dr. Ward has been involved in grant funded research projects, presented at numerous national and international conferences and has co-authored several peer reviewed psychology journal articles and chapter books.

 

About The Doc Outside The Office

Dr. Ward was born and raised in New Hampshire. She returned back to the state of Georgia with her family in 2017 where she currently resides with her husband and two children. She loves the work that she is able to do each day, and she recognizes the importance of balancing life’s many demands to optimize self-care and well-being. She finds it important and enjoys spending time with her family and friends, taking trips to the beach, being active, cheering her kids and husband on at their various activities and sport events, reading and loving on her sweet bernedoodle, Milo.
